Weekly Roundup – Hurricane Survival Edition

I’ve included a few survival-themed posts in this week’s roundup, and with Hurricane Alex bearing down on the Texas coast, I thought it a good time to quickly remind everyone that the time to prepare is before a disaster. We are far enough inland that we are immune from the worst effects of hurricanes, but we still frequently lose power and are susceptible to flooding rains from both hurricanes and tropical storms.

This week we picked up a few emergency supplies to add to our household emergency kit. A lantern, two sets of backup batteries, flashlights and a waterBOB®. A waterBOB® is basically a giant bladder that attaches to your bathtub faucet and fills to store drinking water ahead of a natural disaster that might disrupt water services.

In the coming weeks we plan to pick up a cheap camp stove with a couple propane canisters, and add to our long-term food storage (MREs, dehydrated foods, non-perishables, etc.).
